PhD Studentship in Automotive Transmission System Optimisation and Control

University of Surrey

Supervised by Aldo Sorniotti and John Doherty (University of Surrey), and Carlo Cavallino (Oerlikon Graziano SpA)

3 year studentship supported by Oerlikon Graziano SpA. The studentship will cover fees and a stipend. The stipend will be competitive and based on the experience and research potential of the applicant.

For admission in July 2012 or October 2012.

The correlation between the subjective assessment of gearshift quality and quantifiable physical parameters, such as the profile of vehicle jerk, will be evaluated through experimental tests and simulation. The resulting gearshift quality indices will be adopted during the implementation and the evaluation of novel model-based seamless gearshift controllers for hybrid electric vehicles (torque gap filling). Optimisation procedures for the design selection of the transmission ratios and gearshift maps for automated transmission systems for hybrid electric vehicles will be conceived and validated.

The information gleaned from the project will be linked to the experimental work in Oerlikon Graziano SpA in collaboration with major OEMs. The ultimate goal of the simulation and experimental work together is to derive robust gearshift controllers, characterised by a significant reduction of the time taken to refine the algorithm on the resulting vehicle.

Applicants for this studentship should have a strong background in mechanical engineering, model-based control and numerical methods. The minimum academic requirement for this studentship is an upper second class UK Bachelors level degree or overseas equivalent though preference will be given to applicants who also hold a Masters degree.
