Research for the Environment
The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ is a research institution within the Helmholtz Association. It provides scientific contributions to the safeguarding of the natural basis of life and of human development potentialities for current and future generations under the challenges of global and climate change. In this way the UFZ contributes towards a sustainable development.
The Soil Physics Department seeks to fill the following positions
I) Postdoctoral Scientist (m/f)
Reference: 140/2011
subject to final approval this appointment is effective 01 January 2012 for a period of 3 years. The position is part of the research group MUSIS funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). Titel of the project is “Non-equilibrium processes during infiltration into structured soil.” The successful candidate will experimentally explore water infiltration into heterogenous soils using X-ray tomography. A considerable part of the work will be the estimation of hydraulic heterogeneity through inverse modelling and the development of model concepts to describe non-equilibrium processes in cooperation with project partners. Expected qualifications: i) PhD in soil science, engineer science or related, ii) good knowledge in soil physics or fluid dynamics in porous media, iii) excellent command of English and iv) programming skills would be helpful.
II) Postdoctoral Scientist (m/f)
Reference: 141/2011
effective 01 January 2012 for a period of 21 months. This position is part of the priority program “Biogeochemical Interfaces in Soil” funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). Title of the project is “Quantification of active interfaces with respect to dissolved chemicals in unsaturated structured soil”. The successful candidate will analyse the pore structure of natural and artificial soil using X-ray tomography as input to a pore network model to simulate flow and transport. A major challenge is to extend an existing network model to cope with transient conditions during infiltration and drainage. In cooperation with project partners, the heterogeneity of pore-solid interfaces will be explored and implemented in the model. Expected qualifications: i) PhD in soil science, engineer science or related, ii) good knowledge in multiphase dynamics in porous media, iii) programming skills (preferably C/C++) iv) excellent command of English and v) experience in pore network modelling would be helpful.
III) PhD Position (m/f)
Reference: 142/2011
effective 01 January 2012 for a period of 3 years. This position is part of the research group INTERNANO funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). Titel of the project is “Transport of engineered inorganic nanoparticles through soil affected by the dynamics of infiltration flux and particle properties”. The successful candidate will experimentally investigate the transport of nanoparticles through natural and constructed soil columns using engineered particles in their original form and in some pre-aged form. The challenge is to explore the mobility of the particles as a function of their surface properties, the flux boundary conditions and the structure of the porous media. Pore scale processes are modelled using an existing network model which has to be extended in cooperation with project partners to improve the representation of water-gas interfaces in unsaturated soil. Expected qualifications: i) Master degree in soil science, engineer science or related, ii) good skills in experimental work but also willingness to do modelling iii) basic knowledge of soil physics and iv) programming skills would be helpful.
