Research Project & Supervision

The Humanitarian & Conflict Response Institute invites applications for a PhD studentship to investigate the interface between international and local actors in peacebuilding contexts. This research will consider various aspects of the encounter between international peacebuilding, statebuilding, donor, and development agencies, and a range of local organisations and networks. This encounter may be characterised by interactions with ‘traditional’ or ‘new’ donors and the construction of localised political strategies designed to maintain autonomy or mitigate elite predation or international prescription. The aim of the research will be to try to shed light on the growing problem of the gap between the local and international legitimacy of peacebuilding or statebuilding, and what appears to be a divergence between the architecture of international peacebuilding and localised political struggles for peace, development, order and prosperity.

The candidate will conduct research under the guidance of Prof. Oliver Richmond who is particularly interested in candidates who will develop semi-ethnographic research methods in order to understand how ‘peace formation’ occurs at the grass roots level, and how this impacts upon the state and upon donors in specific contexts. He is particularly interested in cases where the UN has been involved via an integrated peacebuilding mission.

Please note: candidates who completed an application for the previous call for the ‘Interfaces in Peacebuilding’ (June 4th deadline) will still be considered for this award and should NOT submit a new application.
